You’re Not The Only One!

I feel like I have had to say this at least 3 times a week for the last month. So I figured it was only fitting that I write about it since it seems to be the theme. 

Please don’t take this to mean, that you’re not special, you are, but there is a mild synchronicity living in a progressive society where our experiences intersect.

I have multiple clients who put a TON of pressure on themselves to always try to be perfect. This makes no sense to me. These are the same people who are doing an exercise program for the first time ever. It seems that they feel that in doing something they have never done before the first time they do it, they should be able to do it perfectly. If you are nodding your head because you know you’ve done the same, I’ll say the same thing to you that I did to them. STOP IT!

No seriously, stop putting so much pressure on yourself! We can only be human. Your exercise time is supposed to be for you and you alone. I have one client who apologizes every time she makes a mistake or loses her balance while doing a balance exercise. I have to remind her every session that she’s allowed to make mistakes.

Even in the gym I get that there is a little more pressure because you feel that everyone is looking at you and noticing your mistakes, but seriously, WHY DO YOU CARE! If they are watching you it’s usually out of comparison to make themselves feel better or worse, and that funny enough has nothing to do with you! They too are dealing with their own insecurities. Because we ALL have them.

All you can do is to do your best. I stayed late after my last session of the day and talked with a client for 30 minutes. We discussed her beliefs. Her doctor had told her that her core and her arm strength were really weak and encouraged her to engage in an exercise program. She was referred to me by one of my current clients and from the first time she walked in the door she told me everything that she has been told is “wrong with her”. For the next two weeks she would come in with more information about what else was wrong with her and struggle to finish the day’s session. Halfway through her third session, I pulled out the tough love and I told her:

“Stop It! You are so much stronger and capable than you think you are. You were strong enough and smart enough to acknowledge that you needed help. You signed up and showed up, so you need to congratulate yourself for that. You’re struggling with certain exercises because you’ve already decided that it looks hard and you won’t be able to do it. Once you have resigned your mind, your body follows. So we are going to go into this second set, and you are going to trust me that I gave you this because I know you can do it. And more importantly, you are going to trust yourself because you are physically capable of doing this.”

And guess what, she did it! That was last week, and at the end of the session, we discussed all the areas of her life that she had improved upon and how she had been working on her negativity and had come a long way and I applauded her for that. Yesterday was her fourth week session and for the first time she walked in and said, “I’ve had a bad week, I want to be hurting by the end of this session, push me to my limit! “ I was so inspired! It was a complete change in her attitude and in her dedication to her health and wellness. She also asked to add an extra half hour to her sessions so we can focus on the stabilizing and mobilizing exercises that I taught her to do at home!

It’s moments like these that I feel truly blessed. Every time a client has a breakthrough or tells me how much our sessions have improved their lives, it inspires me to keep on increasing my knowledge base and keep on making time to train.

The moral I’m hoping to inspire for you is to know and understand that you are not alone. We all have insecurities and we all need to be reminded of our strengths. So I want you to do two things this month.

1. Give yourself a compliment each day (everyday find something new and amazing about yourself). Say it in the mirror to yourself.
2. Give someone a compliment each day (different person each day)
