Known for her ability to spit out fiery lyrics one minute and then soothe you with a poetic love song the next Amani is thrilled to release this new recording.

Tree Huggers fight for the environment and might hug a tree so that it won’t be cut down. Poetree Huggin is a compilation of 17 poems and poetic songs that speak to the world and human experience.

Amani’s poem I met a Poetree Hugger is about a fictional character that wants the world to hold on to vocabulary, words, syntax and subtext. The title track of Poetree Huggin is particularly dear to her heart because it was created by her nephew Brandon Tolliver. “When Brandon sent me the beat to Poetree Huggin, I was immediately inspired to start writing and singing”, says Amani.

Poetree Huggin has a funky neo soul and jazzy beat and talks about Amani’s life and journey as a poet. Her poetic song Did Anybody Tell You deals with the topic of teen suicide and is meant as a song of encouragement and hope. Amani also deals with topics of love, aging, heartache, her boyfriend Gym and the poetry slam in her poem I DON’T GIVE A SLAM!

Amani’s poems and music will take you on a journey that will make you think, laugh and cry. She will touch your soul with her words and captivate your spirit with her voice and before you know it you will be a fan of this poetic diva. “It’s been 7 years since my first spoken word CD and this CD has been more than 2 years in the making", says Amani. "But it’s all been worth it!”

Neil Armstrong of the Gleaner Newspaper says… “What one gets from the poems on the Poetree Huggin CD are themes of empowering girls and boys, youth violence, teenage suicide, dysfunctional relations between Black women and men, pride in being Black, Black womanhood and the might of the spoken or written word.

In her poems, I Met A Poetree Hugger and Why I Write, Amani celebrates the potency of poetry and expresses the urge to “nourish a new generation of poets” and notes that she is compelled to write, “I write to laugh, I write to release.”

Joining Amani on stage will be composer, singer and one of the former stars of the Lion King, Jeremiah Sparks and smooth blues guitarist Fabio Parovel and up and coming vocal percussionist Ryan Beatspawn Buckspan. Opening acts are: 10 year old poet Unique, 16 year old poetic powerhouse Faith Paré and Soul Singer from Nova Scotia Kirsten Olivia. Amani will be performing a 70 minute set that will showcase many of the new poems and poetic songs on her new CD with a few old favourites thrown in for the audience.

The Poetree Huggin CD was produced by Anne-Marie Woods and recorded at Greyfruit Soundspace and Fullstride Sound Studios. Funding for the recording was provided by Imani Enterprises and the Ontario Arts Council.
